O 15º encontro do Círculo Literário

    Aconselhas-me a tentar a leitura outra vez?
(estava doente, na altura. Muitas vertigens, um grande cansaço)

Fui a favor do livro.

    Então, dou a minha opinião.

  6. Talk Talk is my eleventh novel, published by Viking in July of 2006. It has a contemporary setting and deals with identity theft.
As I began to explore the issue of identity theft as it is used for criminal purposes, I found myself meditating on identity in general--that is, how we distinguish ourselves from each other, how we know who we are in our own minds. Of course, if you're able to read this you will understand that we know who we are because we have been acculturated and because we have have learned to use language. This further meditation on language led me to the creation of my heroine, Dana Halter, and the subject of the book that she herself is writing on the Wild Child of Aveyron, who was found at the age of eleven or twelve living ferally in Napoleonic France, and who, despite the efforts of a truly extraordinary teacher, was unable to acquire language. That novella - of 66 pages - was originally attached to the text of Talk Talk as an appendix, but I have deleted it from the novel and published it separately in McSweeney's 19.
The excerpt below first appeared in the May 31 issue of The L.A. Weekly.
