Esta novela originalmente publicada em 1912 tem como cenário a cidade de Veneza e, em particular, o Grand Hotel des Bains e, é um dos títulos mais lidos da obra de Thomas Mann. A história da paixão de um escritor de meia-idade por um um belo adolescente inspirou mais tarde o realizador Luchino Visconti a fazer uma adaptação ao cinema (em 1971) e o compositor Benjamin Britten a escrever a mesma narrativa numa ópera (em 1974). Goggle-Eyes was awarded the Carnegie Medal for 1989 and the Guardian Children's Fiction Award in 1990, the two most prestigious British awards for children's literature.

AntwortenLöschen"It's either the best or the worst music I've ever written", wrote Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) in a letter shortly after completing the first draft of Death in Venice in December 1972 of what would prove to be his last opera.
AntwortenLöschenThe composer had known Thomas Mann's novella Der Tod in Venedig, published in 1912, for some time; his copy of the standard (inaccurate) English translation by H.T. Lowe-Porter was at 1929 imprint but Britten wrote his name on it during the 1950s or '60s.
Thomas Mann himself, according to his son Golo, loved Britten's music - although it is not yet clear what he knew of it and where he heard it.
Golo Mann told Britten that
"my father used to say that if it ever came to some musical illustration of his novel, Doctor Faustus, you would be the composer to do it."
