Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Poe inspirou-se na sua mulher Virginia para escrever o poema Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

  4. Não me atrevo a fazer a tradução de um poema (a não ser para mim própria), por achar muito difícil manter a métrica e a rima de modo a transmitir a ideia do autor.

    Mas gostei muito! Obrigada, Teresa!

  5. Há muitos anos atrás
    Num reino à beira-mar
    Uma mulher aí vivia e era conhecida
    Pelo nome de Annabal Lee;
    E esta mulher só tinha no pensamento
    Amar e ser amada por mim.

    Eu era uma criança e ela era uma criança
    Neste reino à beira-mar;
    Mas nós amávamo-nos com um amor que era maior do que o amor-
    Eu e a minha Annabel Lee;
    Com tal amor que as asas dos serafins do céu
    Cobriam-na a ela e a mim.

    E era esta a razão pela qual, há muito tempo atrás,
    Neste reino à beira-mar,
    Um vento soprou de uma nuvem, gelando
    A minha bela Annabel Lee;
    Por isso os seus antepassados chegaram
    E a levaram para longe de mim,
    Para a fecharem num sepulcro
    Neste reino à beira-mar.
    Os anjos, nem no céu meio felizes,
    Tiveram inveja dela e de mim.
    Sim!- Foi essa a razão (como todos sabem,
    Neste reino à beira-mar)
    Por que o vento saíu à noite da nuvem,
    Gelando e matando a minha Annabel Lee.

    Mas o nosso amor foi mais forte do que o amor
    Dos que eram mais velhos do que nós-
    De muito mais sábios do que eu-
    E nem os anjos acima no céu,
    Nem os demónios abaixo por baixo do mar,
    Alguma vez poderão separar a minha alma da alma da bela Annabel Lee.

  6. Por que a lua nunca irradia sem me trazer sonhos
    Da bela Annabel Lee;
    E as estrelas nunca acordam até que eu sinta os olhos brilhando
    Da bela Annabel Lee;
    E assim, durante toda a noite, eu me deito ao lado
    Da minha querida-minha querida-minha vida e minha noiva,
    Nesse sepulcro ao pé do mar,
    No seu túmulo ao pé do sonante mar.

    Teresa é muito à letra, mas a ideia está lá: amor, morte, tradição, mar, sepulcro, a presença da noite, sobrepondo-se à vida, ou à luz do dia.
